For the new year of 2025, the Digital Economy Ministry commenced its work under the leadership of Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne in the Ministry of Digital Economy.
Addressing the staff of the ministry and the attendees, the Minister emphasized the need for a public service that has long been under pressure from the people of the country to now commit to delivering a highly efficient and effective service. In his remarks, the Minister stated that the Ministry of Digital Economy has been given the primary responsibility of driving the digitization efforts, which are fundamental to transforming the public service into an efficient and effective system.
Dr. Hans Wejeesooriya, Chairman of ICTA and Senior Advisor to the President, who was present at the event, also provided his insights. He noted that addressing the needs of the nation begins with understanding the problems faced by the people, businesses, and the economy. He expressed optimism that even a 3-4% economic growth is achievable with the right strategies by increasing revenues and reducing costs. He emphasized that digital empowerment could enhance productivity for everyone—from entrepreneurs to trishaw drivers. Multiply that impact across 20 million people, and the result is massive. The key, he added, lies in innovating based on the problems shared by the people and businesses to create solutions that address their needs. ‘Let us join hands and unlock our growth potential,’ he urged.
Mr. Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy, spoke about the ambitious goal of advancing the digital economy by digitizing the entire country, in tandem with the Clean Sri Lanka Project, aiming to achieve a USD 15 billion digital economy.
In addition to this, the Commissioner General of the Department for Registration of Persons, the CEO of ICTA, and the Chairman of SLCERT, Director General of TRC which fall under the Ministry of Digital Economy, were also in attendance.
